In Australia currently we are the only AABMGS Stud to own Purebred coloured babydolls
Since the Australian government has ruled we are not permitted to import live sheep, semen or embryos from overseas, the only way breeders can introduce colour into their flocks is by the use of quality breeding-up programs. That is, by crossing purebred Babydoll sires with coloured ewes of any breed and continuing to increase the percentage of Babydoll bloodlines whilst still including a coloured fleece in the resulting offspring.
We are very passionate about developing the coloured Babydoll in Australia, focusing on producing a sheep that embodies the look and type of a purebred Babydoll, retaining its superb meat qualities, temperament and small size, yet with the added
splash of colour.

Combining all the assets of the purebred Babydoll, by selecting stock that closely resembles the Babydoll breed standard, has allowed us to produce rams close in size and conformation to what we would expect of a purebred Babydoll ram. These rams have gone on to win interbreeds, proving the superior quality of a Tanjar Babydoll.

THE QLD GRADE C RAMS

Tribute to the two rams we sent over to the eastern seaboard in 2018
Meet two of the Rams Behind the Tanjar Legacy in Australia's Coloured Babydolls
These influential rams played a foundational role in establishing the Tanjar bloodlines within the coloured Babydoll flocks across Australia. Selected for their structure, temperament, and distinct coloring, they were instrumental in setting the type and consistency now associated with Tanjar-coloured Babydolls.
Each ram brought different key genetic traits that helped shape the early generations of the coloured Appendix program.
The influence is now visible in the consistency of type, size, and signature markings found in both The Camare Babydoll and the Pukerangi Babydoll lines with each stud individual strategic pairings and their vastly different breed focus these sires left a lasting impact.
Not only did they help diversify the gene pool, but they also cemented a reliable foundation for future breeders aiming to carry on and refine the coloured Babydoll lines in Australia.

TANJAR DOUG

Tanjar Doug was an impressive young ram, known for his rich chocolate colouring, ideal conformation, and strong bloodlines. He carried the signature Tanjar traits, including the distinctive white nose spot and upside-down “Y” marking.
Genetically, Doug carried the potential for both transverse striping and mottling, traits he successfully passed on to his offspring. Uniquely, he also had a distinct blue patch in one eye—a rare feature that has contributed to the emergence of blue-eyed sheep within the Camare flock.
Doug was sired by the Australian Titled Champion Tanjar Little Spot and was line-bred back to Hillgrove 16/09 through his maternal line. His deep colour, inherited from both his dam and grandmother, helped secure his place as a promising and influential sire.

In March 2018, Doug made the journey to Camare Babydoll Southdown Stud in Queensland to serve as their future stud sire, where he remained until his passing in December 2025. Doug leaves behind a remarkable legacy through the many quality offspring he sired. His influence has significantly contributed to the high standard now seen in AABMGS-registered sheep along the East Coast. Credit goes to Jo and Rod of Camare for their careful selection of exceptional ewes that truly complemented Doug's genetics.
Doug remains one of the best coloured Grade C rams we’ve bred and sent to Queensland. While he will be greatly missed, we look forward to reintroducing his bloodline into the Tanjar flock in the near future, with several of his granddaughters set to make their way to Western Australia in 2026.

TANJAR SOLOMAN

Tanjar Solomon
Tanjar Solomon was born here at Tanjar from one of our favourite ewes, Tanjar Badonkadonk—a large, well-built ewe known for her rich chocolate colouring, which we greatly value. She had previously been paired with Hillgrove 20/13, a compact ASSBA-registered Southdown ram originally purchased from Murray and Judy Peart in Victoria. Hillgrove 20/13 possessed exceptional Babydoll traits, and this pairing had already produced our homebred Champion Ram, Tanjar Mateo.
Due to the success of that mating, we repeated the pairing the following year, resulting in the birth of Solomon—a large, dark chocolate single ram lamb. However, from an early age, Solomon began to display more Dorper-like traits inherited from his grandmother, rather than the classic Babydoll characteristics of his sire. Because of this, he was offered for sale and quickly found a home at Pukerangi Babydoll Southdown Stud in Queensland.
In October 2018, Solomon, along with three other Tanjar-bred sheep, was transported to his new owner, Lorraine Wilkinson of Gregory River. Lorraine absolutely adored Solomon and, over the next four years, bred numerous lambs from him. Sadly, following her passing in 2022, the Pukerangi Stud was dissolved. Solomon and the remaining flock were then transferred to Roggolii Stud in New South Wales. Not long later the Pukerangi flock was disbanded, Solomon found his final home at Osbourne Ridge Stud, where he remained until his passing in 2024.
Solomon was heavily used at stud, producing a diverse range of coloured offspring from both Modern Southdown and Babydoll lines. His genetic legacy continues through flocks across Queensland and New South Wales. Notably, Solomon carried the rare transverse striping gene through his maternal line, and he has made a significant contribution to the preservation and spread of this distinctive trait within Australia
