Babydoll Ewes

Being a British sheep, breeding begins in February and March each year with lambs expected to be born after 138 to 159 days gestation. Lambs due from July each year.
Babydoll ewes can have single, twin or triplet lambs and we even had one set of quads in 2021. Babydoll ewes are
wonderful mothers and are attentive with their lambs and with their gentle temperaments they are easy to handle. Our ewes lamb naturally but due to the cold weather around the time of lambing, ewes and lambs are moved inside into pens to help protect the lambs from the cold and from foxes. This also allows for hand feeding to provide the best start for the ewe and lamb. We breed ewes at around 18 months of age although ewe lambs can come into estrus as early as 8 months. To prevent breeding at this age our hogget lambs are paddocked separately from our older ewes. All our ewes receive Cobalt & Selenium Pellets and are regularly Mineral drenched to provide adequate Vitamins & Minerals for Health and Production.

Ewes ovulate naturally in response to the shortening daylight that occurs during autumn and early winter. During the hours of darkness, ewes produce melatonin, and when this increases it stimulates hormonal activities that leads to ovulation.

To ensure lambs get the best start in life our ewes are selected to have good milk production.
